What earned the score

  • Spoiler Reveals a plot point

    Female Combatant as Gender-Role Inversion

Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natalie Rushman, uses acrobatic maneuvers to hit, kick, and choke about a dozen guards into submission. Her role as a woman in the traditionally male action-combatant position functions as a decorative gender-role reversal, distinct from the film’s central conflict.

  • Women Rescue the Male Hero

Black Widow and another capable woman are described as having to rescue the reckless Stark, placing women in the protector role and casting the male lead as dependent on them.

  • Woman as Combat Specialist

A woman takes on groups of men with martial arts and an array of weapons, and later throws a man in a boxing-ring fight. The film gives her the traditionally masculine action role of a formidable fighter.

Parents Guide

  • Sex Mild

Tony and Pepper share a passionate kiss after the final battle

In the scene where Natalie Rushman walks in, Pepper and Tony are sitting on the couch. Tony essentially "googles" Natalie and there are photos of her in undergarments. You can see it on the table after they stand up from the couch as well.

Iron Man jumps out of a plane and is flying towards the ground dodging obstacles. When he lands he's onstage with maybe 15 dancers all in short shorts and small tops. There's a lengthy dance number as Iron Man lands and machine arms come out and undo the Iron Man suit to reveal that Tony Stark is inside. You can skip to Tony Starks speech and they'll be gone.

Natalie Rushman wears a variety of form fitting outfits throughout the film reveal cleavage and highlight her figure. Regular camera shots focus almost entirely on her hips and buttocks. In a scene towards the end, she undresses in the back of a car. She is shown in her bra but nothing is seen below her waist.

A man's bare buttocks can be seen in a video clip.

Tony Stark(Robert Downey Jr.) searches for Natalie Rushman(Scarlet Johansson) on the Internet and he sees a pic of her in a Bra and Underwear.

Natasha Romanoff(Scarlet Johansson) is in the Backseat of a car, changer her dress. Natasha Zips down her Dress, which reveals her bra, Only her top part is shown, Then she gets down on the seat, Out of Camera and the scene ends. Happy Hogan(Jon Favreau) who is driving the car gets distracted by her.

  • Violence Moderate

Some blood thrown into the action

The villain beats up a cellmate and smashes his head on the toilets. A bomb explodes in the cell later, it is implied that the man who was knocked out dies in the explosion. The villain also breaks a prison guard's neck. Not graphic but a gruesome sound effect can be heard.

    Moderate marvel superhero violence.

Level Of Violence 6/10 Moderate Violence And Mild Injury Detail.

The main antagonist self-destructs his armor to try and kill Stark and Rhodes. However, they both escape, with the villain killing only himself. He is not seen again after the explosion.

Happy bites a chunk out of a security guard's ear. Not bloody at all but there are quite gnarly sounds and crunching noises.

Ivan's the only one who ends up making such a suit work. First he designs a stripped-down model with the electric whips. He tries it out on a Monte Carlo race coursewhile Tony's driving a car on it. His whips slam down on speeding cars cutting them open, turning them into fireballs, making them crash.

Ivan and Iron Man end up duking it out with fists and whips, of course. And Tony's chauffeur rams Ivan over and over again to try to subdue him. In prison, Ivan kills a prison mate and a guard, and he blows up his cell. He sics deadly drones on Tony, and innocent civilians get in the way. The humanoid-looking drones fire missiles, shoot guns, throw punches and eventually explode in a variety of ways. Ivan also claims control of an earlier generation Iron Man suit worn by Rhodey. The suit's been armed to the gills with a variety of guns and missiles, making it a lethal adversary when Ivan and Tony clash again with Rhodey held hostage in the middle of it all. Eventually, Ivan unveils his next-gen supersuit which is so formidable that Tony and Rhodey have to team up to fight against it.

Each battle is spectacularly loud, fiery and frenetic.

Natalie hits, kicks and chokes about a dozen guards into submission. Both Natalie and Tony fight an opponent in a boxing ring. Tony "wins" his match by cheating. (He starts kicking.) Natalie uses acrobatic fight maneuvers. A bodyguard has a long, drawn-out fight with a security guard. Ivan apparently kills two guards, leaving him with blood on his hands. (We see his victims dangle from the ceiling.)

  • Profanity Mild

    Jesus Christ is blasphemed once.

"God," "jesus," "christ," "crap," "hell," "d**n," "ass," "b**ch," "pr*ck," "s**t," and bleeped in-universe uses of "f**k" respectively.

The word "s**t" is used three times, once in French (merde). Two f-bombs are self-censored on a television program. Other curses include "ass," and "b**ch" respectively. The word pr*ck is used in the very end of the movie but it is hard to hear.

  • Drugs Mild

During what he believes could be his final birthday party, Tony gets drunk to the delight of the party's attendees, but the chagrin of his friends. (And the movie makes it clear that we're not supposed to like it either.)

He carelessly shoots bottles and watermelons with his hand jets, tries to drunkenly kiss Pepper and antagonizes Rhodey to the point where he dons an older Iron Man armor to force Tony to stop.

Elsewhere, Tony and others drink wine, martinis and vodka (some of which is given to a cockatoo). Tony and Pepper open a bottle of champagne to celebrate her promotion. We learn that Ivan's father raised him in a "vodka-fueled rage."

  • Frightening Scenes Moderate

In the Senate Hearing scene in the movie, we see short clips of failed Iron Man knockoffs. These clips contain the camera POV getting blood splatters. And in the last clip the person who maintains the failed armor twists his entire waist the other way when the suit malfunctions. A very somewhat comedic scream is heard when this happens.

Rhodes Rhodes and Tony stark have a physical falling out in one scene with their super suits, this is tense to watch.

Tony stark and Rhody rhodes fight like children over Tony betraying him in one scene.

The actions scenes, especially the final battle, are quite intense. Some of Whiplash's actions may scare some emotionally fragile viewers.

Ivan attacks a car race by pummeling several and splitting one in half. This is a very intense scene for people who haven't seen many movies.

The battle between Rhodes and Stark is unsettling considering it is a very violent match.

While in his suit, Rhodes and several drones behind him, are remotely controlled (by Ivan) to fly and fire at Stark, in an attempt to kill him. This could frighten some viewers.
