What earned the score

  • Anti-American Undercurrent

The film includes comments described as conveying rebellion and disdain for America, giving the story an anti-American undertone.

  • Race-Swapped Ned Leeds

Filipino-American Jacob Batalon plays Ned, a traditionally white comic-book character, making the casting an instance of identity-driven revision.

  • Revisionist Slavery Claim

Michelle claims the Washington Monument was built by slaves, a political race-history assertion the film uses as a joke and that frames its historical revisionism as a casual aside.

  • Manufactured Diversity Casting

The film gives nearly every secondary role to a person of color, a conspicuous diversity push the story’s Queens setting does not fully disguise. The casting feels engineered to answer Hollywood’s diversity critics rather than arising naturally from the material.

Parents Guide

  • Sex Mild

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) speaks into a recording device operated by Peter Parker (Tom Holland), stating, "Hey May I hope you're wearing something skimpy."

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) undresses to his boxer shorts before putting on his spider suit. Later he removes the suit in front of another character before getting dressed again.

Characters play a game of "F, Marry or Kill" before verbally discussing whom they would "F".

A boy states to a woman that he is watching porn before the brief interaction concludes.

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) sneaks into his room through the window at night, and when he opens it, his aunt is seen passing from a distance with a seemingly bare back.

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) dine outside before a waiter offers them complimentary dessert and winks at Aunt May afterward.

Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) lies to a teacher about watching pornography, thereby avoiding suspicion about his connection to Spider-Man during this brief, comedic moment.

More than once Stark tells Peter he has "screwed the pooch". In one instance he elaborates by telling Peter he has screwed the pooch, but then taken her to the vet and decided to raise the hybrid puppies.

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is repeatedly called "Penis Parker" by a bully before individuals chant the nickname at a party.

  • Violence Mild

Spider-man is stuck under rubble bloody and pleading for help.

Vulture stabs Peter in the shoulders with the metal talons and he shouts in pain.

Peter is bashed against the ground multiple times until unconsciousness by Vulture.

An explosion occurs and it endangers the lives of multiple teenagers and people although no one is killed.

Gun-toting henchmen that work for Vulture are beaten and one has a car thrown into him.

A bank robbery breaks out, and Spider-Man rushes to fight. One of them (who is wearing a Captain America mask), holds him in the air with a sci-fi gun for about 10 seconds, and Spider-Man is seen knocking all their heads together and they are all wearing avengers masks. He then leaves them there for the police.

Level of violence: 4/10. Some blood.

A character gets disintegrated by a piece of alien weaponry. We find out moments later it was an accident.

Spider-Man is given a fairly savage beating by the Vulture near the end of the film, but this only lasts for a couple of seconds. However, a building is dropped on Spider-Man, and some blood is shown.

  • Profanity Mild

At one point, a girl says "and for me it would be "'F' Thor, marry Iron Man and kill Hulk."

After the end of movie, Aunt May walks in the room and she saw Peter is the real superhero 'Spider-Man'. And she says "What the Fu-!" at the end before the credits roll.

"Ass" and similar words are used.

Infrequent uses of "suck," "god," "crap," "penis," "hell," "d**n," "ass," "b**tard," "a**hole," "s**t," on-screen use of the middle finger, and two separate uses of "f**k" that were bleeped in-universe and unfinished towards the end respectively.

"Crap," "hell," "d**n," "ass," "b**tard," "penis," "a**hole," & "s**t." There is one bleeped use of the f-word and one notable cutoff of the same word at the last scene just before the credits.

During the high school party, the teenagers engage in chanting "penis, Parker" repeatedly.

    Occasional and mild-to-moderate profanity.

One incomplete use of the f-word; other minor profanities, used infrequently, like "s**t," "d**n," "b**tard," "b**ch."

Middle finger, as an insult, is used once.

  • Drugs None

    Alcohol is consumed.

  • Frightening Scenes Mild

The Vulture can be seen as frightening.

Some of the actions scenes can be intense.

Milder than the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield instalments. This one is very light-hearted throughout.

In two separates scenes, people are trapped in an elevator that is about to fall, and a ferry boat with passengers is split in half. In both cases, everyone escapes unharmed with the latter achieved with Iron Man arriving to assist Spider-Man.

At one point in the movie a character is crushed underneath rubble and screams out in distress. However, given that this is Spider-Man, he gathers himself, both physically and spiritually, and uses his super-strength to lift the rubble and throw it off of himself with considerable effort.
