What earned the score

  • State Power as an Allegory of Oppression

The Capitol uses the Reaping and televised death games to keep the districts submissive, turning spectacle and media control into instruments of state power. The government itself is portrayed as the source of violence and suffering, with children as its victims.

  • Media Spectacle as Social Corruption

The televised killings turn violence into entertainment, and the film indicts a voyeuristic media culture that rewards the spectacle. Gale’s suggestion that viewers stop watching frames the audience’s participation as a way to undermine the games.

  • Katniss Recasts the Provider as a Female Action Hero

Katniss hunts to feed her family, volunteers to take Prim’s place in the Games, and fights to protect others in the arena. The film gives its female lead the provider, fighter, and protector roles, recasting heroic agency around a woman.
