What earned the score

  • Race-Swapped Norse Guardian

Idris Elba is cast as Heimdall, a traditionally white Marvel character, bringing race-swapped casting into the film.

  • Women as Combatants

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow fights as one of the Avengers, while Wanda/Scarlet Witch is presented as a formidable opponent who attacks the team. Both women occupy the fighter role.

  • Spoiler Reveals a plot point

    Divine Name Given to Android

Vision introduces himself with “I am. I AM,” echoing the name God gives himself in Scripture. The film puts that sacred declaration in an artificial being’s mouth as a provocative religious reference.

  • Scripture Twisted for Villainy

Ultron mocks Christian faith with lines about confessing sins and building his church, and turns biblical language into a taunt against Captain America. The film uses Scripture as material for the villain’s irreverence.

Parents Guide

  • Sex Mild

One main character wears a suit that shows mild cleavage and several other women appear throughout showing even more.

A few kissing scenes in this movie

A joke about Prima Nocta is made. Prima Nocta is a myth in which medieval lords had the so-called right to rape a woman, typically on the night of her wedding, to deflower and shame her. But this will fly right over kids heads and is played for laughs.

A euphemism referencing a vegetable is quipped about two characters disappearing for sex.

There is one mention of "breast" throughout the entire film.

A man falls down and his face lands into a woman's breasts.

A man, having just finished shaving leaves the bathroom and sees a woman waiting outside the door. He tells her that he didn't realize she was waiting. She says that she would've joined him but it didn't seem like the right time. He says that they missed their window. He tells her that the others used all the hot water. She then states confidently that she should've joined him.

A painting of completely nude woman is visible for less than a second and it's also very blurry and not focused on.

  • Violence Moderate

This movie contains some intense, highly destructive action sequences, in which there are a huge amount of implied, mostly offscreen deaths and injuries. People fleeing for their lives are seen throughout the film. Nothing less or more than expected in a superhero movie.

An image is shown on Iron Man's phone of a man with his head crushed and with a message written on the wall behind him (in blood, implied). This is very brief and as it is only an image it's not very disturbing.

A character's arm is cut off by the main villain (We partially see the stump, but its not shown clearly. We do hear blood spilling, it is very audible, and adds to the disturbance).

Many HYDRA soldiers are shot by Iron Man, and are seen clinging to their legs (no blood, just pain).

A main character's torso is injured by a weapon. He is taken to a medical lab, where a futuristic machine regenerates his tissue (we see the bloody wound twice: once before medical attention, and once where the machine is regenerating tissue, as we see flesh regenerating).

Many robots are shot with an arrow (While this happens, electricity sparks).

A character is struck in the head with an arrow that gives an electrical shock to her brain (another character comes and saves her). Skin, skull are not pierced, no blood or gore.

Two main characters fight for a prolonged time. They both throw several punches and kicks at each other. At one point, one of them punches the other's tooth out.

A main character is shown being electrocuted on three different occasions.

A main character has a memory of a party where two German officials are fighting (Very brief).

  • Profanity Mild

During the opening attack on the HYDRA research facility in Sokovia, Tony Stark/Iron Man shout "s**t!" after he hits an energy shield. And Captain America warns and yell "Language!" to watch his mouth.

    5 uses of "ass," 1 use of "s**t," 1 use each of "p**sed off," "son of a b**ch," "d**k" and "b**tard."

  • Drugs Mild

At a party, a main character is seen drinking a rare type of alcohol while talking to a group of elderly men. One of the men asks for a drink and later, we see him drunk. (Meant for laughs.)

All the main characters get very tipsy at the party and are later seen hanging out and being silly.

  • Frightening Scenes Moderate

There is a part where J.A.R.V.I.S is absolutely obliterated by Ultron

During a vision, we see a man without pupils. He acts strangely and it is very creepy. The atmosphere of the scene is creepy in general.

Pietro's death scene can be frightening or intense for some viewers

There is a droid that is somewhat broken and dismantled that speaks in a deeper more disturbing manner. The additional dismantled wires and broken look may add to the disturbance for viewers.

A character uses her powers to give other characters dreams, which may be frightening to younger audiences.

This movie is a bit darker in tone than the first, but still light-hearted with some humor.

There is a large number of anonymous, implied deaths and injuries (mostly offscreen) throughout the film.

Ultron may be threatening and frightening to some viewers and can seem to be very intense and frightening.

A character's death might be intense for some viewers. The reaction given by another character is very emotional, and may depress viewers.

Tony Stark has a nightmare of finding The Avengers dead in a cave. We briefly see them lying on the floor dead, Captain America has a large blood stain on his shirt and some nosebleed. Bit scary. Captain America was uttering the words "You Should've Saved Us".
