Doctor Strange (2016)

What earned the score

• Blackwashed Mordo Casting

Chiwetel Ejiofor, a Black actor, plays Mordo, a character established as white in the comics. The casting revises the legacy character’s race.

• Race- and Gender-Swapped Ancient One

Tilda Swinton’s casting recasts the Ancient One, established in the comics as an Asian (Tibetan) man, as a white woman. The change rewrites both the character’s ethnicity and sex.

• Women as Action Combatants

Women occupy the fighter role: one woman unleashes destructive attacks against male defenders and engages in magical combat, while other women also take part in the film’s fights. The action assigns women a traditionally male-coded combat role.

• Woman Leads Protective Order

The Ancient One heads a powerful secret organization tasked with protecting the world from magical attacks, placing a woman in charge of the film’s guardian order.

• Same-Sex Parentage as Backstory

A young woman refers to her two mothers and says they disappeared when she was young, casually establishing a same-sex-parent family as part of her backstory.

There are multiple surgery scenes where the wounds are shown being sewn or entered with surgical instruments.

The car accident has slow motion shots of Steven's hands getting crushed.

The post accident shots of Steven are both bloody and kind of gruesome with all of the stabilizing metal work coming out of his hands and his face is disfigured and scarred.

There is a scene where Steven is attacked by three thugs who beat him to the ground and kick him repeatedly.

A theme in the movie is that countless universes are taken over by Dormammu in his dark dimension. At the end, you can see Kaecilius entering the dimension, and his body shrivels as he is doomed to face eternal suffering. The fact that trillions of innocent people, including children, are suffering for eternity might cause stress in some viewers.

The main character skids off a mountain road, crashes his car and is almost killed; his hands are broken and he loses the ability to do his job, which requires the very diligent use of hands and fingers (He is a doctor). This man is seen in a desperate place, being forced to give up his job.

The main character is beaten up by a group of thieves and his last, precious possession is broken.

The main character is shown a dark being and told how this being is constantly trying to destroy the earth and all life.

The main character is almost killed and emergency surgery attempted

The main character's spirit projection appears out of his body, scaring the doctor in the room; he gives her guidance through the projection.
