Wednesday (2022)

What earned the score

• Pilgrims as Religious Zealots

Wednesday describes the Pilgrims as religious zealots who committed mass genocide, framing a group tied to America’s founding history as violent religious extremists.

• Diversified Bully Archetypes

Black actors Joy Sunday and Iman Marson play Bianca, a mean girl, and Lucas, a bully—roles the review says have historically been played by white actors. This recasts familiar antagonistic archetypes through deliberate racial diversification.

• Girls as Active Fighters

Wednesday and her werewolf roommate Enid work together to take down a monster and an attacker, and Wednesday also beats up boys who attack her. The girls are cast as the active fighters and protectors.
