Michael (2026) delivers a refreshingly agenda-free narrative, steering clear of the usual woke pitfalls like forced DEI or feminist lectures. A minor quibble: it critiques MTV's exclusion of Black artists as racial bias, a subtle nod to anti-Western grievance-mongering, but overall, unpretentious entertainment prevails.

What earned the score

  • MTV's Racist Blackout Critique

The film discusses MTV's refusal to feature Black artists, implying racial bias in the American music channel's programming.

Parents Guide

  • Sex None

    Some mild innuendos.

  • Violence Mild

Michael's Dad smacks him with a belt several times when he is around 8 years old. Michael is crying. Quite upsetting.

  • Profanity Mild

Occasional mild language such as "s**t", "a**hole" and "ass" as well as "d**n" and "God".

  • Drugs Mild

Some characters smoke, but this is in keeping with the time period in which the film is set. Some alcohol is consumed by characters, but not to excess.

There is a televised news report that mentions the use of illegal drugs.

  • Frightening Scenes Mild

The scene in which Michael's dad inflicts corporal punishment on him with a belt during his childhood years is arguably the most upsetting scene in the film, especially as he squeals in pain and cries loudly. There is also a scene in which Michael goes into a room with the father when the latter simply holds up a belt but we do not see nor hear any kind of corporal punishment here.

Several horror movies are seen on TV while Michael is watching them. They are old fashioned horror movies, but some young children may be frightened.
