The Choral forces a closeted gay protagonist, Dr. Henry Gutherie, fresh from abandoning his male lover in Germany, into a 1916 Yorkshire tale, while anachronistically shoehorning Black characters into seamless integration, ignoring historical racial realities for cheap DEI points over genuine storytelling.

What earned the score

  • Closeted Gay Protagonist

Dr. Henry Gutherie is portrayed as a closeted gay man.

  • Male Lover Abandonment

Dr. Gutherie recently returned from living in Germany, where he left his male lover.

  • Anachronistic Black Integration

Black characters are integrated seamlessly into the 1916 Yorkshire town with local accents and no comment on racial differences, presenting an anachronistic portrayal that ignores historical Western racial hierarchies.
