Wokeness

4/10

Noticeable

Contains several overt ideological themes throughout the main plot.

Audience

A Useful Ghost squanders its premise on a transgender ladyboy lead and ghosts as tired metaphors for LGBT+ lifestyles, clumsily pivoting to queer political rants that prioritize agenda over actual entertainment—classic Hollywood wokeness at its laziest.

What earned the score

  • Transgender Ladyboy Lead

The story begins with an academic ladyboy character who buys a faulty vacuum cleaner that releases dust overnight.

  • LGBT Ghost Metaphors

Ghosts in the film serve as metaphors for LGBT+ experiences and alternate lifestyles.

  • Queer Political Shift

The second half of the film shifts to political commentary and queer relationships.
