What earned the score

  • Normalizing They Pronouns

Prue’s father says Mac’s future partner, whether “she, he or they,” can live with the family. The line folds gender-neutral pronouns into an ordinary family conversation as an LGBT-inclusive aside.

  • Naked Childlike Automaton

The mechanical doppelgänger, meant to resemble a 12-year-old boy, is shown naked from several angles, with his backside visible. The film puts childlike nudity on screen, even though the figure is an automaton.

Details

Prue and her classmate Curtis are drawn into a magical forest filled with enchanted creatures, loyal allies, and formidable adversaries as they embark on a desperate quest to rescue Prue's abducted baby brother from a murder of crows led by a mysterious woman named Alexandra.

Parents Guide

  • Sex Mild

Two people kiss. One of them is clearly a man while the other one is bit ambiguous. The scene lasts a few seconds.

Rear View nudity as a clockwork boy undresses before committing suicide.

  • Violence Moderate

A prolonged battle scene in the last act which has a lot of violence (usually not too graphic, but definitely more so than expected) and even a decapitation which is seen from afar without any graphic detail.

Strong bloody violence including shootings, stabbings (one of a baby during a fantasy sequence), impalments, people are run over and burned, a brief decapitation from a distance and an eye gouge.

A fierce war erupts involving multiple graphic casualties.

A boy stabs a coyote, blood shown splattering.

A man decapitates a coyote with an axe, easy to miss.

A woman tries to make a young boy kill a wounded man. When he hesitates, she promptly kills the man herself with a sword.

A group of soldiers mercilessly shoot several prisoners just to quiet the rest down.

A child is reared by his horse off a cliff to his death. No impact is shown, but the child's decaying body and, later, his skeleton are visible.

The antagonist is impaled by multiple branches.

Characters graze their palms on sharp plants. Some bleeding is shown.

  • Profanity Mild

    1 use of "son of a b**ch".

13 uses of "Oh my God!"

    Use of hell.

A boy refers to himself as, "...a p-word" (sic)

  • Drugs Mild

One scene had Prue "drugging" her parents by serving tea with a sleep spell, telling them it was to help calm them down.

Several references to witchcraft and spirituality.

  • Frightening Scenes Moderate

Suicide. A resurrected mechanical boy removes his clothes, reaches into his chest to remove a cog that serves as his heart and steps off the balcony to fall onto the concrete below.

Strong disturbing violence, suicide and thematic material.

Although there's plenty of dark humor throughout, there's also plenty of legitimately intense and frightening scenes, especially towards the end.

Many people (both humanoid and animalistic) die throughout the film, including both major and minor characters.

Children are often put in danger, especially a baby who's intended as a sacrifice. The child viscerally screams in fear a lot.

The main villain is a particularly disturbing individual, one who's pretty sympathetic after facing a personal tragedy, but also pretty scary as said tragedy has caused them to do many deplorable things as a result.

Many disturbing themes throughout, including war and violence where many innocent people are kidnapped or killed.
