What earned the score

  • Women Cast as Combatants

Women occupy the action-film fighter role: two women fight, and another woman tackles a man and tries to strangle him. The film places women directly in the physical-combat action.

  • Mother as Action Hero

Maia, a woman, carries a gun, pistol-whips a thief, and endures a dangerous citywide run to rescue her son. The film casts her as the active protector and action hero.

  • Christian Sacrifice Undercut

In a church, a priest invokes Christ’s blood and sacrifice, but Maia’s immediate remark about the amount of blood in the human body seemingly mocks the declaration, undercutting Christian imagery with a dismissive gag.
