Men Made Disposable by the Curse
The Owens curse makes the women’s beloved men recurring casualties: it takes Sally’s husbands, while Kylie’s boyfriend Gideon is struck by a car and left comatose after she tells him she loves him. Male partners become the price of the women’s romantic and family lives, treated as disposable within the central conflict.
Sisterhood as Supreme Power
The film frames the Owens women’s sisterhood as the force that carries them through the curse and its consequences, declaring that no magic is stronger than sisterhood. This didactic emphasis makes female solidarity the family’s defining, overriding power, even as its revolving suitors complicate the claim.
Gender-Role Slogan
A throwaway exclamation—“men can do anything women can do”—reduces gender roles to a slogan rather than developing the idea into a substantial argument.
Male Authority as Persecutor
A monarch impregnates a woman—one man says the pregnancy resulted from rape—and has her burned at the stake for allegedly bewitching him. The story casts male authority as the source of violence against a woman and her family.

Parents Guide
Sex Mild
Brief sexual references.
No nude pictures. There is a guy on a bed that is fully nude but you don't see anything.
A couple is seen kissing in bed, before it is implied they have sex off-screen.
A brief verbal reference is made to rape in a historical context.
A character seems to be naked and paralysed; another character makes references about him.
Unnecessary female nipple exposure on multiple occasions with camera focus on a couple scenes, really not needed and spoilt the movie for me.
Violence Mild
A character references someone being sexually assaulted. Very unexpected and may cause more sensitive viewers to feel uncomfortable/triggered.
Moderate fantasy violence.
Scenes include people being stabbed in a fantastical context and a woman's head being slammed against a wall; however, the impact is not seen.
References are made to historical murders.
There is sight of blood following violent incidents.
A person is shown with injuries after being hit by a vehicle.
Characters cut their palms with blades during witchcraft rituals.
A young character's head is violently smashed into a brick wall.
A character is stabbed in the heart with a sharp thin metal stick onscreen after that grey smoke comes out of there body.
Profanity Mild
Very few curse words, including one use of the f-word.
Infrequent use of strong language ('f**k') features as well as milder terms including 'ass', 'crap', 'hell' and 'God'.
Strong language (f**k) other profanity's such as ( d**k) (b**ch) (ass) (p**s) (crap and jerk) are used much stronger language then the first one.
Well over 10 profanities including the F-WORD is severe.
Drugs Mild
Some drinking and smoking in the background. Mention of margaritas throughout. Alcoholic beverages in the kitchen at a party.
Margaritas and other alcohol beverages are used some characters are seen to be heavily drunk.
Frightening Scenes Mild
In flashbacks, a woman is shown about to be burnt at the stake.
There are also fantastical sequences featuring dark magic.
Moments of threat include a person being knocked unconscious and tied up, and a person being hit by a car.
Emotional scenes deal with death and people's grief in the aftermath.
A character is chased through a dark ruins. The character is caught and their head is smashed into a wall. In other scenes characters are seen being stabbed, mild cuts with blood, a person is hit by a car and goes in a coma.
