What earned the score

  • Alyce as Rebel Fighter

Alyce joins the armed forces dragging wealthy priests from churches and beats them while demanding that they repent. She is presented in the traditionally male role of a physical fighter within the rebellion.

  • Coercive Sexualized Inspections of Teen Girls

The king’s guards slam teenage girls against a wall and reach beneath their skirts to determine whether they have come of age, while the girls cry and their families protest. The scene depicts the age check as coercive, invasive sexualized contact with minors.

  • Crown as Oppressive Institution

The conflict is driven by commoners resisting excessive royal taxes and demanding political change; the king’s forces also attack people who have laid down their weapons. The crown is framed as a source of harm, with ordinary people bearing the consequences of its rule.

  • Faith Weaponized by Clergy

Priests tell the ploughman that plague and abuse are part of God’s plan, guilt him into taking up arms, and officials claim God wills the rebels’ deaths. Religious authority is portrayed as a tool for coercing the poor and legitimizing violence.

  • Prayer Shown as Ineffectual

Richard and his mother repeatedly pray for help, but the prayers do not improve his rule, and he ultimately presides over a massacre. The story uses their failed appeals to cast Christian prayer as powerless amid the kingdom’s violence.
